As an Organizational Development Manager, I happen to have lived my aspirations at Mobilink and I am pleased to be a part of Mobilink’s dynamic success story. Through this blog post I wish to share how we at Mobilink plan and devise strategies to bring about a positive change, and how we sync-in our cross functional teams in order to maximize work efficiency.
Organizational Development team reaps remarkable results especially when it comes to cultivating positive attitude.
It exists to inculcate smooth and positive work culture by focusing on development of human, social and technical skills in the organization. The aim is to create and maintain a culture of excellence and most importantly a conducive work environment. The building blocks to ensure such a work environment lie in the areas of culture, performance and change.
Positive attitude doesn’t come overnight neither is it a crash course we can put our employees through; it takes a lot of sustained effort, strategizing and time. Open communication is key to starting off any such initiatives – it is the backbone of any relationship between an employee and employer. A communication gap can distort expectations in different tiers and could lead to demotivation in employees. That is why we especially stress the importance of open communication at Mobilink and plan out tools and programs to promote it throughout the hierarchy.
Secondly, our focus is on the importance of being able to give and take constructive feedback – the giving end to be critical not demoralizing; the receiving end to keep an open mind, with their emotions under control and positive enough to understand the importance of constructive feedback. Rushing into arguments does no one any good; nor does developing a ‘tunnel vision’ that keeps one from appreciating different perspectives. Everyone has a different attitude, and hence a different viewpoint. We promote mutual understanding through open platforms for discussions and encourage people to understand the importance of performance dependency.
Positive attitude is quite a generic term and organizations use different tools and techniques to have the right mold for their environment. Here at Mobilink, we shape the concept according to our work habitat through training programs to bring about desired changes. We offer a variety of training programs on themes that include: Conflict Management, Role of Women in Corporate World (specifically known as ‘Rise of the Corporate Women’, using feedback constructively (‘Achieving through Feedback’) and many more.
The most important factor in fostering a culture based on positivity is the role and attitude of people managers. Though the Human Resources function entertains employee apprehensions and helps out by providing appropriate counseling, grooming and coaching; line Managers play the most vital role in the wellbeing of their employees as they deal with them directly. Thus, the OD team has to ensure that the line Managers are equipped with proper knowledge and tools to identify any warning symptoms, as well as use coaching and mentoring techniques to ensure positivity amongst their team members.
Any effort without measuring the result is meaningless. In order to gauge the effectiveness of our initiatives and to establish way forward we conduct regular surveys for gathering feedback on working environment, working relationships, policies, procedures, empowerment, benefits and facilities provided to employees.
The OD Team at Mobilink works very closely with the Management team to ensure that organizational strategies are communicated to the employees in order to ensure organizational alignment.
An aspiring OD Manager needs to stay focused and certain of what he/she is signing up for; have a lot of patience to deal with resistance against the changes they propose, and possess an ability to operate under higher stress levels.
If you can challenge norms and are interested in changing organizational cultures, OD is the right choice for you. The job is intense, but the gains are personally rewarding; knowing that you made a positive contribution to your organization, and perhaps to the lives of so many, is a wonderful feeling.
